PROP

prop, a series of paper clothing
from flat surface to 3D/coupe

in bygone days people used to buy quality, clothing had to endure and it did. where grandma had her closet full with 'classics', her grandchildren are buying all the cheaper versions nowadays. the arrival of H&M, Zara a.o made the fashion industry even more temporary then before. clothing is bought impulsively (costs are low), worn for a couple of times (max. one season) and then often thrown away.

the reason to design a series of paper clothing is to 'capture' this temporariness, by using a material which lends itself to be thrown away, as a fumble of paper. paper is a material which above all is known as a bearer, it mainly concerns the writing on it instead of its form/shape.
at the moment you start making paper clothing, something contradictory happens. when you're inserting a zipper with a lot of attention and precision, you suddenly realize that the garment can be destroyed at any moment. one inappropriate movement and the garment is torn.
so why spending a lot of time and attention to a not so common and wearable garment? in the past, at the time of the tailors, this time and attention was given to all garments, for textile was very valuable. nowadays lots of garments are produced without this attention, e.g. in the sweatshops in the Far East. textile has long lost its value, the love for the material is gone. hopefully my paper garments will show this attention and affection/love, why otherwise spending that much time on making something so temporarily? exactly with this contradiction I want to express that clothing, in all its simplicity, can be admired again, even if it's just for a second ....

when using paper as a garment, it will become more and more beautiful every time you wear it, until it has become so soft that the paper will tear. these tears can be fixed with adhesive tape or by sewing it together, in order that the 'scar'/wearing sign will remain visible. like this, the garment is going to tell a story, the story of its bearer, who maybe has scribbled - in a hurry - a phone number or a shopping list onto it....
